Homeward Bound Villages Cuts Ribbon On Six Units At Karwick Village In
First Ever Affordable Housing Cooperative Community In La Porte County
NOVEMBER 17, 2025, MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA: Homeward Bound Villages is thrilled
to announce that it has unveiled the first six units of many in its new initiative, Karwick Village,
with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Saturday. Homeward Bound Villages is a non-profit and
thought leader in affordable housing in Northwest Indiana. Karwick Village is the first
cooperative community to be built by Homeward Bound Villages and the first of its kind in La
Porte County. The celebration took place on Saturday, November 15th, with elected officials,
senior community stakeholders, referral partners, and the community in attendance.
“We started as a big, bold idea that our community could come together to create cooperative,
affordable homes, that is now a place where families will sleep, kids will do homework, and
neighbors will borrow sugar and keep an eye on each other’s pets,” said Sandi Keller, Board
President of Homeward Bound Villages. “This project has never been about the buildings alone.
City and county leaders who said ‘Yes, this matters,’ funders and donors who took a chance on a
small non-profit with a big vision, construction partners who problem-solved through weather
delays and a thousand or more tiny details, and most of all, it’s about the future Karwick Village
residents…you all are the reason that we kept going on hard days. This place belongs to you, and
we are honored to walk alongside you.”
This groundbreaking ceremony marks the culmination of years of planning, fundraising, and
partnership that have brought this cooperative affordable rental community to La Porte County.
Homeward Bound Village’s mission is to create community through affordable housing, and
Karwick Village is the realization of this mission.
The unveiling of the first six units of Karwick Village, constructed to foster community,
strengthen networks, and encourage a robust sense of belonging among its residents, marks the
first step in the organization’s mission to bring affordable, cooperative rental housing to La Porte
County.
Lynetta Crawford, future resident of Karwick Village, spoke at the event saying “What about the
ones that can’t afford a two-hundred-thousand-dollar house? A one-hundred-thousand-dollar
condo? I’m glad to know that I was accepted. Now I don’t have to live in an apartment where the
rent goes up every year. When I’m living here, I will always know that my rent will not go up,
here at Homeward Bound. I’m glad to be a part of our community.”
Elected officials, senior community stakeholders, referral partners, future residents, and the
general community helped Homeward Bound Villages cut the ribbon in celebration of the
unveiling of Karwick Village. Homeward Bound Villages is thrilled to have unveiled La Porte
County’s first-ever cooperative, affordable housing community, and looks forward to supporting
the community’s growth.
