As we roll into August, we have some exciting construction updates to share with you all about Karwick Village. Our team is hard at work building La Porte County’s first affordable cooperative rental community. It is so exciting to see this long-planned dream come to life before our eyes. We want to thank each and every one of you for your support as we work towards the goal of welcoming our first residents this year.  We also want to thank our construction manager, Jimmy Pressel, and all the wonderful contractors who are working on our project.

Since our Last Update:

Clearing and grading have continued at the back of the property. This is important for erosion and for the health of the native plants on the property.  Invasive species and dead trees have been removed. We are also framing on our 2nd residential building, which began late last week.  The first building at the back of the property is now closed in with windows, doors, and roofing underlayment.

Last, we finally have signage up for Karwick Village!  Due to ongoing utility and grading work, finding a stationary spot where the sign can remain during construction has been challenging. This temporary sign is located on the side of a residential building until a stable location is secured.

Upcoming this Month:

We have more framing and roofing to complete as we work towards being watertight in both residential buildings.

Mechanicals, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical will be roughed in within the next week.

We’ll be digging up the front again to install water lines and conduit for electricity when we’re ready. The city is also set to connect the site for water and electricity within the next few weeks.

Upcoming Work:

The Community Building architecture plans, courtesy of Global Engineering, now have a state stamp of approval, and we’ll be pouring the foundation soon. Stay tuned for more information on the community building, as we will have ways for the larger community to get involved.

Landscape planning that will maximize native plantings that thrive best in sandy soil is well underway. We’re expecting volunteer opportunities in October for final clearing and planting to become available shortly. However, feel free to reach out anytime if you’re interested in being part of the planning.

While construction continues ahead, Homeward Bound Villages has begun to offer resident information sessions for interested future residents. Check our website under Villages/Apply to register for one of these sessions. You can learn more about how it works even if you aren’t applying to be a resident.

Seeing these future homes rise from the ground is so special for our organization and for everyone who has helped us get to this point. We are so grateful for the support. Be sure to stay tuned for more exciting updates!
